Welp, Armageddon Expo: Christchurch edition is imminent and as was fully expected I have yet to complete my cosplaying endeavours, though I have made a start on junior’s Eleventh Doctor fez. There may have to be an intense push before the weekend. Also my sewing machine is behaving a bit like Alexis Carrington on a bad day, ie “SUPER bitchy”.
Which is why the notion of not-quite cosplay is so appealing. This is a term I just made up, by the way. As far as I know it’s not actually called that but I’m not sure what it is actually called. I’m talking about the subtle art of putting together an outfit that is inspired by a character, which gives the suggestion of their look without being a full replica of their costume. The best examples I can find of this are on the Disney Bound Tumblr.
It’s all terribly, terribly clever. I also happened upon a few examples of this when I was researching my Princess Bride birthday party on Pinterest, like these cute outfits from College Fashion (I especially like the Vizinni combo, because HOTPANTS).
The only problem, of course, is that most of these are out of date and/or the items are not available in New Zealand so I went about creating my own not-quite cosplay outfits using either local retailers or those that ship to Aotearoa.
