One of my Twitter threads that should really have been a proper piece of writing (maybe).
I don’t know who needs to hear it (yes, I do) but White Supremacy is the general idea that things are just naturally better if white people are in charge. That’s it. You don’t have to be a signed up member of the KKK, or go around threatening people with violence.
Anyone who is just quietly feeling like white people being in charge or in exalted positions is the most comfortable option – or the converse, that non-white people being in charge of stuff is uncomfortable – is a white supremacist. Yes, even your aunty.
That’s why it’s so dangerous and insidious, because people can be doing it all the time – and sometimes without really noticing. It’s not their fault that they just feel grumpy about everything Māori politicians say and do… they’re just having opinions!
White people are just the default (which is the natural order of things, after all) and colonisation was beneficial because it meant white people got to do what they’re best at which is making the rules for everyone else. See? It’s just making everything normal.
I’m not even sure if white supremacy is even necessarily hate (although that is all too common) as much as it is utter dismissiveness. Just out and out disdain. So white supremacists can say “I don’t hate anyone” and probably mean it. But so what?
Just needed to get that off my chest, whānau.
Kua mutu.
