Last night the fiancé and I attended The Foo Fighters’ Christchurch concert, the first of their 2015 Sonic Highways World Tour.
It was epic in more ways that one. In order to get there we had to battle sleep deprivation (we’d both been awake since at least 4:30am), baby-wrangling and babysitter organising, and monstrous traffic
. And then there was the queue to get into the stadium which was massive and slow and meant we missed the first two songs of the Foos’ set.
I’ve never been to a gig that was at the very beginning of a big tour and it was actually rather infectious and joyful to see this group of guys who were clearly totally thrilled to be playing music together. Pat Smear had a massive grin on his face (DIMPLES!) the entire time. It was great.
But of course, when you talk about The Foo Fighters’ a big part of the appeal is frontman Dave Grohl. He is a cool dude. I know not everyone likes The Foo Fighters’ (music snobs, especially) but fuck ’em, you’ve got to give credit where credit is due – Dave Grohl has a great rapport with an audience. Well, at least this audience member.
So here are my top seven reasons you should love Dave Grohl.
- His daft bounce. Dave Grohl singing and playing an upbeat number at a microphone is adorable.
- He biked for 4 hours through Christchurch so he could see the devastation caused by the earthquakes. Not a motorbike, a bike bike. He talked a bit about our city and what it’s been through. A little while later they played Times like these and I nearly cried.
- He promised to come back to Christchurch and play a free gig here (and they once did a charity gig in Auckland with the proceeds going towards the Christchurch Earthquake Fund. This engenders a lot of warm fuzzies from Cantabs, I can tell you)
- He was such a massive fan of The X-Files that he once wangled himself a spot as an extra in the episode “Pusher”.
- He says “fuck” A LOT.
- He screamed so much last night that he started to lose his voice, something that he admitted he hadn’t done for a long time.
- He took the piss out of our accent, referring to Pat Smear as “Pet, Pet, Pet!”
Love ya, Dave. Never change.

Christchurch wasn’t the start of their world tour at all
Wasn’t it? That’s what he said. Unless he meant the Aus/NZ leg of the tour? Hmmm. Confusing.
