My first library position was when I was seven and was allowed to shelve books at my primary school library. They gave me a badge that said “librarian” and everything, which seems a bit like overstatement now, to be honest.
Fast forward to 2000 and that’s when I got my first paid library gig. Part time library assistant and keen as mustard. So that’s nearly 15 years worth of library employment. Wow. Don’t I feel old all of a sudden.
But you do learn a few things in that time. How libraries work and how they don’t (you can’t just rock up and say you returned that book, actually, and why don’t you wipe all my fines, little lady?). You also discover that libraries are one of the best people watching places you’ll ever find. Plus you get to know all the little added extras that modern libraries provide and which are sometimes overlooked by their patrons, and you learn a few tricks on how to “play” the library system.
And I’m more than happy to share those tips with the Internet at large. Intrigued? Then head on over to my post at Cake Oven, How to…library like a boss.
